In this video, I’m going to be going over some drills to help you practice your Escrima at home.
I’ll review the box theory, go over a warm up, review the 5 basic strikes, and then at the end of the video, go over a drill to help you practice those strikes, transitioning from one to another.
A quick review of the box theory; you have your vertical midline which dissects your body in half up and down, and you have your horizontal midline, which dissects your body in half across the chest. This makes four separate quadrants.
This is where your strikes are going to be and these strikes will relate to the different zones:
1. Upper right side of the body
2. Upper left side of the body
3. lower right side of the body
4. lower left side of the body
5. Number five is a stab straight out. If empty handed, this would be a punch.
The box extends out to your target. When you’re striking, you want to be aiming at the different zones, not the target.
So to start off, take your stick, you want to always keep your other hand kind of tight to your chest if you’re just using a single stick.
#1 strike goes over hand to zone 1 at a diagonal direction across the right side of the body.
#2 strike goes with the backhand going diagonal across zone 2, the left side of the body.
#3 strike goes (holding stick with palm up) back up diagonally at zone 3, across the lower right side of the body.
#4 strike goes (holding stick palm down with the bottom up) back up diagonally at zone 4, across the lower left side of the body.
#5 is going to be a stab or if empty handed, just a simple punch.
