What do we need sunglasses for?
You’re probably thinking by now, “we’ll to block the sun from our eyes genius!”
While that is true there was one specific element of the sun that we are blocking from our eyes and that is ultraviolet rays, and when you’re going to look for a new pair of sunglasses, this is what you want to be looking for.
You want to be looking for my little sticker, should be on the lens somewhere, that’ll say 100% UV protection.
UV rays can cause damage to the retinas, can cause cataracts, which is like the whitening of the eye, and can cause your skin to wrinkle.
Which is why we wear sunscreen, especially around your eyes, your eyes are the most sensitive part, the skin is really thin here which means a lot of exposure to the sun will get those wrinkles going around your eyes.
If you’re planning on being outside for an extended amount of time. It is suggested that you buy a pair of sunglasses that have wider protection, maybe wider lenses that wrap around like these glasses here.
I have a pair of sports sunglasses here that have a wider lens on them so they’ll extend around the side giving me further protection across my eyelid.
Darker doesn’t mean better
Another factor to consider with the lenses is that darker doesn’t always mean better. Just because the lenses are darker does not mean that they’ll provide extra protection.
If you see colored lenses, what that does is increase the contrast and those would be good for people that play outside sports like say golf or baseball.
If you see polarized lenses and you’re wondering what polarization means. What that means is it, the lenses will decrease the glare off of water if you’re out on the lake or if you’re in the mountains, snow skiing, the polarized lenses will decrease the glare off the snow and the water and that’s an added benefit for having polarized lenses.
How much should they cost?
Expensive does not always mean better when it comes to sunglasses, just because it’s more expensive. What you’re usually paying for is the actual frame, the actual structure or of the sunglasses themselves. You still want to be looking for 100% UV protection and this can come and cheap sunglasses.
I got a pair of $5 sunglasses down in San Diego that still got 100% UV protection on them.
Even got some sportier ones here, these ones are a little bit more pricey, but as you can see the frame is more of plastic, which makes them better for sporting uses.
I like to use these when I’m practicing martial arts outside, so they a wrap around my head, stick to my head pretty good.
And then also you don’t want to forget about your kids, right? When you’re out with your kids in the sun. Make sure they got proper eyeglasses too, and make sure that you’re also looking for the one hundred percent UV protection for your kid’s sunglasses as well.
